Illegal Immigrant Sentenced to Prison

Last Update: 3/10 9:40 pm

A Mexican citizen with a criminal past, who was convicted of being a deported alien in the United States, was sentenced Monday to nearly six years in federal prison.

Jesus Garcia-Cardenas pleaded guilty Oct. 15 and was sentenced by U.S. District Judge M. James Lorenz.

Lorenz found the defendant's 1989 convictions for voluntary manslaughter and attempted robbery constituted "aggravated felonies" and justified a significant increase in his sentence to 70 months.

Garcia-Cardenas also has convictions for grand theft and providing false identification to a police officer.

The defendant was arrested in the unincorporated San Diego County community of Tecate on Nov. 2, 2006, by a Border Patrol agent and immediately admitted being a Mexican citizen in the United States illegally, prosecutors said.
