SAN DIEGO - A man who drove toward a Customs and Border Protection officer as he attempted to flee a border checkpoint was sentenced in San Diego Monday to 37 months in federal prison.

Ricardo Zavala, 32, pleaded guilty to felony assault on a federal officer.

According to court records, Zavala admitted that last May 18, he aggressively accelerated out of a secondary inspection booth in Andrade, crossing the northbound lanes into the southbound lanes.

A federal officer and his human and narcotic detector dog were standing in the southbound lane, when the officer saw Zavala look directly at him and steer the car toward him, prosecutors said.

The officer and the dog were able to avoid the vehicle, which missed them by less than a foot, according to prosecutors.
