OTAY MESA, Calif. -- U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said they seized marijuana from two vehicles attempting to cross the border in the same night.

The first bust was made last Friday night in a tractor-trailer rig. CBP officers said they found 330 wrapped packages of pot hidden inside the floor of the vehicle. The narcotics were valued at more than $5 million.

The drugs were found by officers using a gamma-ray system scanner. The system is used to scan all empty trailers as trucks enter the port, according to customs officers.

When officers examined the floor of the trailer, they found a non-factor compartment filled with cellophane-wrapped packages of the drug.

The driver, identified as a 31-year old Mexican male, was interviewed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and was transported to the Metropolitan Correctional Center for processing.

A second seizure was made the same night, this time, officers arrested a U.S. citizen after discovering marijuana in the car he was driving.

The 34-year-old man entered the Otay Mesa port of entry in the designated SENTRI lane last Friday night. During a secondary inspection, officers discovered 16 wrapped packages of pot hidden in the spare tire of the car.

Officers said the drugs were valued at $225,000.

The driver was taken to the Metropolitan Correctional Center to await arraignment on drug smuggling charges. His SENTRI pass was revoked, according to officers, and the vehicle and narcotics were seized by CBP officers.
