Utah: Some Fear The Taco Could Hit The Fan

Some fear list of alleged illegal immigrants could spark violence.

"A list of alleged illegal immigrants living in Utah is prompting comparisons with other episodes in history. It's also fueling broader concerns that the contentious immigration debate could turn violent."

No historic comparison. Just manipulation and fear that laws will destroy the cushy situation illegal immigrants have been enjoying in Utah for years.

SALT LAKE CITY -- The list of alleged illegal immigrants living in Utah is prompting comparisons with other episodes in history. It's also fueling broader concerns that the contentious immigration debate could turn violent.

All week long, a list of 1,300 people accused of being in Utah illegally has been the focus of a state investigation. Now investigators say it appears a state worker, or group of workers, is behind it all."When they threaten you with your life, or they make indications that people should be shot, that is just overstepping the lines," Latino community advocate Tony Yapias said during a press conference Thursday.

Yapias said he's received e-mails calling him a "filthy traitor" and saying "illegals" should be "scared" for their life.

One Utah historian worries this case echoes other troubling chapters in American history.

"We go through these waves, these cycles, these patterns of anti-immigrant sentiment," said University of Utah history Professor Bob Goldberg. "This is anti-alien stuff that is detrimental, in my mind, to the health of this country."

One parallel: Sen. Joe McCarthy, who sparked a wave of fear during the 1950s when he said he had a list of hundreds of known communists working inside the federal government. His accusations turned out to be entirely unsubstantiated.

Sen. Joe McCarthysparked a wave of fear during the 1950s when he said he had a list of hundreds of known communists working inside the federal government Goldberg also cites other troubling examples in history, like the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and the prejudice against African Americans in the Jim Crow era.

"What was crucial, in order to fight the Klan off and to make sure the hold of the Klan did not become secure, was that white protestant leaders stand up and say, ‘This is wrong. This is not the way Americans behave, and we need to change our behavior,'" Goldberg said.

At Thursday's news conference, it was pointed out a quarter of illegal immigrants in Utah are not Latino, but the controversial list is compiled of nearly all Latino surnames.

"I am outraged as a parent. We call ourselves ‘the family state.' This is how we treat families?" said Peggy Wilson, who was representing Latino parents.

Others worry an anonymous list today could become something worse tomorrow.

"The ugliness and the violence that's possible, it shakes you up," said Archie Archuleta, president of the Utah Coalition of La Raza.

    UTAH; Some fear

OH please! Hackers breach dadabases every day and no one blinks an eye. But in this case the ILLEGAL ALIENS are listed and identified for ENFORCEMENT agencies and it is declared a witch hunt ?
What happened to the concept of reporting crime? Oh yeah, more of the fundamental change we were promised.

IA's steal our personal Identifications and apparently even our Gov. thinks it is Okey Dokey.Yet when citizens fight back against Law Breakers they will be crucified if caught.

Citizens are frustrated beyond endurance by their tax dollars being spent to sustain Illegals and their children who are breaking our laws.

Not too long ago Brooklyn Techs data base was hacked and info on over 2000 students was made public for a short time until the hack was discovered. What I found interesting was that of the over 2000 students only 103 had SS#s. Hmm I wonder why?
