HIDALGO COUNTY - He's from Mexico, lived in Starr County but died in Hidalgo County. It's up to sheriff deputies to connect all the dots and find a killer.

Abraham Rodriguez Correa's case is a puzzle. The 47-year-old illegal immigrant was killed then left on the side of the road, his body run over by passing drivers.

"He could have very easily gotten shot off the roadway, and when he got run over, his body could have been pushed over," said Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño.

A woman who lived nearby, who recognized Correa, said all they heard were the gunshots.

Investigators recognized Correa as well. Correa was a criminal, deported four times and always made his way back to the United States. The sheriff believes he was likely involved in criminal activity.

"If you're going to come back into the United States that many times after being deported, then you’re involved in a human trafficking organization or he was drug running for somebody," said Treviño.

Investigators believe those criminal ties led to the murder. They'll retrace the steps of the suspected smuggler from Mexico into the Valley to the side of the Hidalgo County road where Correa’s body was found.
