Two men, including the reputed New York leader of the ferocious MS-13 gang, were arraigned in Brooklyn federal court Thursday in the murder of Flushing-native Maurice Parker, who was gunned down while talking on his cell phone in front of a Bowne Street convenience store nearly two years ago, authorities said.

First, the reputed head of a violent street gang had to be handcuffed and hauled into a Brooklyn courtroom in a wheelchair after refusing to show up to face charges that he killed a man.
Then, Oscar "Taz" Fuentes, 28, resorted to a bizarre legal strategy in the case that could potentially land him the death penalty - demanding that he be allowed to fire his lawyer and plead guilty.
Fuentes, 28, the accused leader of MS-13 gang in New York State, was hit with the new murder charge yesterday for allegedly staging the drive-by shooting of an innocent 21-year-old Queens man, Maurice Parker, on May 18, 2007.
"I make my choice your honor," a disheveled Fuentes cried out, as his lawyer asked Brooklyn Federal Judge Sandra Townes to order a mental health evaluation. "If I make something wrong, if I make something illegal, I want to pay for it."
Fuentas, who has been held behind bars for gun possession since 2007, then complained, "When did the case change? I was willing to cooperate and all of a sudden today they don't need my help?"
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Jones told the judge Fuentes was "in a wheelchair, not for health reasons, but because he's a violent gang member who refused to come to court."
Townes entered a not guilty plea for Fuentes and agreed to keep Hurwitz on the case and appoint a second lawyer to represent the accused gang leader while the feds determine whether to seek the death penalty.
"My warning and advice to you is you don't know where to begin with defending yourself," Townes told Fuentes, as the victim's mother looked on from the spectator seats.
The night of the murder, Fuentes and MS-13 soldier Julio Chavez, 23, were driving the streets of Flushing and "looking to commit a drive-by shooting" when they spotted Parker outside a store, Jones wrote in a letter.
Chavez and another gang member allegedly sprung from the car and shot Parker six times, including three shots to the head.
MS-13 is a violent international street gang of immigrants from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala..
