Durbin will most likely NOT bring D.A. for a vote.

Local students fight for "The Dream Act"

    By: Anthony Welsch,
    Date created: 9/21/2007 7:07:41 PM

High schoolers took their message to the streets of downtown Knoxville Friday, pushing for a dream.

A group of mostly juniors and seniors urge support of The Dream Act.

It's a bill in the House of Representatives and Senate that would give undocumented students a path to citizenship and the chance at in-state tuition for college.

Supporters say undocumented students who have the grades should get the chance at a college education. If they can't afford it, they should at least be given the same opportunities as the other students they've gone through school with.

They say most children don't make the decision to come to U.S. without papers. But at times, it's as if they're being punished. Supporters say undocumented students are turned away from most universities.

"All the undocumented kids, they would have a chance to go to college, make better lives for themselves, get a better education." Joe Nunez, a senior in Knoxville said.

"So, if we have children supporting our economy -- they are going to be supporting through an education or military -- What else do you want from an immigrant?" Lisa Barba, a Community Organizer with T.I.R.C.C., the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition said.

Opponents of the bill say it's unfair for families who may not contribute as much in taxes to receive benefits like in-state tuition.

According to Senator Lamar Alexander's office, it's unclear at this time if and when the Senate will vote on the bill. A spokesman from the office says the bill's sponsor, Dick Durbin was quoted in a Washington newspaper saying he will likely not bring the bill to a floor vote.

I say we can't let our guard down, and assume he'll bring it up for a vote next week. So, please still fill up voice mails this weekend, and get ready to call first thing Monday morning.

I agree. They are so deceitful that this may simply be a ploy to get us to stop calling. I won't believe it until it is official. Until then, I will continue to fight.

Why don't they have this chance in Mexico? Why is that Felipe Calderon and Carlos Slim? Then they could support Mexico's economy upon graduation.

Here's an entry from a blogger on redstate.com. I don't know how reliable this writer's info is, or about the title of the post, and I can't link to the Wall Street Journal article that's referenced. But this shows we can't let up or let our guard down:

Amnesty now! Why the "Dream Act" will pass.

Dick Durbin has a new sales pitch to get the DOD behind supporting the "Dream Act". He intends to attach the legislation to the defense authorization bill that will be rushed through later this fall and thus hide this, as much as he can, from the public.

The pitch to the military is allow undocumented immigrants, who have a high school diploma, the option of enlisting in the armed forces. I assume they would have to pass the ASVAB vocational test with the same scores as citizens, as well as criminal background checks but I have not been able to confirm this.

Bill Carr, Deputy Undersecretary for Military-Personnel Policy is pushing this from the civilian side of the Pentagon.

I spent five years recruiting and keep in touch with the folks doing it today. Although the job is challenging, the services are meeting their recruiting goals. There is NO recruiting crisis.

The most cogent article is in the WSJ (subscription required).

note: None of the appropriations bills have been passed so far, watch as they roll them into big bundles with a little sugar for everyone and rush them through in the dead of night.

Kit Bond - my senator - has pledged to vote against it..... by St. Louis Conservative
...hopefully Claire McCaskill will too since she opposed the first immigration bill, but you never know. I think grassroots activists have done a pretty decent job of getting the word out on this thing. Limbaugh and Laura Ingraham have been talking about it on the radio, plus NumbersUSA is already all over it. I'm cautiously optimistic that it will die.

Illegals don't deserve to go to our hospitals and schools just because they were born.

Amazing how kids just don't get it.

They are putting the kids out there for sympathy, what about OUR kids who fall behind because of the ESL classes being offered to illegals?

Honestly we all need to start having our own marches, cause the illegals will use every trick in the book.

I don't trust anything Durbin has to say. I will continue to email and call until this dies.
