A small group of Senate and House Republicans are meeting Monday night to discuss how to pass an immigration overhaul through Congress.

Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who has been hungry to rewrite the nation’s immigration laws this Congress, is attending the session. Most top members of Republican leadership in the House and Senate are not attending the confab, according to sources.

“Just talking with my colleagues, trying to figure out how to make a bill work,” Ryan told POLITICO, when asked about the meeting. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) is involved in the planning, according to two sources.

Members who received the invitation describe the guest list as being a small group of Republicans who want to pass a reform of the nation’s immigration laws this Congress.

The meeting comes just two days before a full House Republican Conference meeting on how the party will move forward on immigration reform.
