NEW YORK—Mayor Michael Bloomberg will spend at least $10 million of his personal fortune promoting moderate candidates around the country in the final weeks before Election Day, he announced Wednesday, adding himself to the list of wealthy Americans pouring millions of dollars into the 2012 election.
The Democrat-turned-Republican-turned-independent, one of the wealthiest people in the country, said his self-financed super PAC—to be called Independence USA PAC—would focus on candidates in sync with him on issues including gun violence and education reform. It would also advocate for ballot measures on issues such as gay marriage—of which Bloomberg is a vocal supporter.
"It's critically important that we have elected officials in Washington, Albany and around the nation who are willing to work across party lines to achieve real results," the mayor said in a statement. "I've always believed in the need for more independent leadership, and this new effort will support candidates and causes that will help protect Americans from the scourge of gun violence, improve our schools, and advance our freedoms."
Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson, a political veteran who worked on Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign in 2008, is taking a leave of absence from City Hall to head up the effort.
Among the candidates Bloomberg's group will support are: former Maine Gov. Angus King, now running for Senate there as an independent; former Democratic Rep. Dan Maffei, running for his old congressional seat in upstate New York; Republican Rep. Robert Dold, running for re-election in Illinois; and Gloria Negrete McLeod, a California state senator running for U.S. House.
"There'll be others," Wolfson said Wednesday. "Every journey begins with a single step. I don't think we're going to transform Washington in a day, but the NRA is on the field spending millions to influence elections, and it's important for people who feel differently to have their voices heard as well."
Other American billionaires have been leveraging their wealth to make an impact this campaign season. George Soros has put millions of dollars into liberal super PACs, and conservative brothers Charles and David Koch have been pouring their funds into a group that has bought billions of dollars in ads. But unlike those groups, Bloomberg has declined to announce a presidential pick.
Wolfson said the mayor's super PAC wouldn't be paying for any presidential ads.

Bloomberg is exactly he guy that Obama says is a fat cat with too much influence and money. Most of the people that are supporting Obama's agenda are the 1% and he just keeps on taking heir money and working help them get more by importing more easily manipulated and cheaper population for them to make money off of or use for cheap personal services. I wonder how many illegals work for Bloomberg. Unfortunately, he seems to think he is the King of NYC and that he needs to spread his self serving kingdom. They are millionaires and billionaires... NYC to Accelerate $1 Billion in Capital Expenditures, Mayor Says
NYC to Accelerate $1 Billion in Capital Expenditures, Mayor Says
By Henry Goldman - Oct 17, 2012 12:59 PM PT
New York will speed up $1 billion in spending on “critical” infrastructure, including bridges, roads, schools and libraries, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
The projects, most of which would be completed within 20 months, had been part of a four-year capital plan. Under the changes announced today, the city will borrow the money sooner to take advantage of historically low interest rates, saving taxpayers more than $200 million in debt service over the term of the bonds and creating 8,000 jobs, Bloomberg said at a City Hall news conference.
“Borrowing now makes good fiscal sense; we’re going to have to do these things,” said Bloomberg, who announced the plan with city Comptroller John Liu, whom he credited with developing the idea, and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn. The two officials, both Democrats, have expressed interest in running to succeed Bloomberg, an independent legally barred from a fourth term.
The partnership between Bloomberg and Liu, who have disagreed on labor and tax policies during the past four years, signified a “contrast to places like Washington, where people from opposing parties or ideas cannot get anything accomplished,” the mayor said.
‘Need Jobs’
Aside from saving the city money and improving its infrastructure, the primary benefit of the program would be to create jobs, the three officials said. The city’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 9.9 percent in August, compared with 9.1 percent a year ago, according to the state Labor Department.
While the state Labor Department reported private-industry employment in the city rising by 93,100, or 2.9 percent, to 3.32 million in the 12 months ending in August, construction jobs probably fell 0.6 percent to 110,800, the fewest since 1998, according to a report today by the New York Building Congress, a trade association representing developers, construction companies and labor unions.
“We need jobs,” Liu said. “High unemployment rates and persistent income disparities are hurting our recovery.”
Today’s plan reduces by about half a proposal from Liu in May that would have speeded the borrowing of $2 billion for infrastructure projects, which Liu said would have created about 15,000 jobs.
Bloomberg said the city didn’t have enough short-term construction projects to justify that plan.
