Drug bust is largest in Cleveland history
Cleveland police announced Tuesday that they made the largest drug bust in the city's history and recovered more than 3,000 pounds of marijuana from a tractor-trailer.
Police arrested eight men, two from suburban Cleveland, on suspicion of drug trafficking. The other six are believed to be from a Mexican gang on the West Coast, police Lt. Thomas Stacho said.
The first clues came Friday when detectives from the department's gang impact squad arrested a suspect in Cleveland for selling marijuana, Stacho said.
That arrest led them to a trailer Sunday in the 19700 block of South Miles Road in Warrensville Heights. It held packages of dry soup and bales of pot with an estimated street value of $3 million.
"These [detectives] were on the street, working their sources and turning one seizure into a bigger seizure, to a record seizure," Stacho said.

The local men arrested were Robert Moore, 31, and Michael Parker, 32, who have addresses listed in Beachwood and Maple Heights.
Besides marijuana, police seized $386,000 in cash, seven firearms and eight vehicles. Police in Highland Heights and Warrensville Heights assisted Cleveland narcotics officers, who worked under a grant through the Domestic Highway Enforcement program.
The others arrested are Tiodoso Hiquera, Juan Madrigal-Avalos, Juan Hverta, Ramon Santana, Sara Sarinana and Efren Benavides. Police did not release their ages or where they live. All are being held at City Jail, and they are to be formally charged later this week.
The bust is the largest in the city's history, said Police Chief Michael McGrath. Along with law enforcement, the city must address the demand for drugs through social service, drug treatment programs and job opportunities for teens, he said.
"When you get a large seizure like this, it sends a message to those folks out the avenue about selling drugs and what may happen to them," McGrath said.
