Undeclared cash lands man in jail

DOUGLAS, Ariz. — A New Mexico man has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle $20,000 in undeclared U.S. currency into Mexico.

Customs and Border Protection officers at the Douglas Port of Entry were screening travelers going into Mexico on Thursday as part of an operation. The officers selected a vehicle being driven by a 25-year-old Albuquerque resident.

Officers say the man was found to be carrying $5,000 in undeclared cash and they became suspicious of his demeanor. His vehicle was searched with a high-tech X-ray unit and authorities discovered another $15,000 in cash concealed in three packages inside the dash area behind the stereo unit.

The $20,000 was seized and the man, whose name was not immediately released, was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials for prosecution.
