A 38-year-old Mahopac man was indicted Friday on charges of alien smuggling and transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.

George Vieira was accused of transporting three people from Peru to Mahopac in the summer of 2007, according to the indictment.
He did so intending to have sex with one of the individuals, a girl who was then 12 years old, authorities said.
"This kind of sordid and intolerable exploitation, if proven, carries severe penalties," said Preet Bharara, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York. "Unfortunately , these crimes are not uncommon."
In a separate incident, Vieira was accused of selling a counterfeit DVD box set for financial gain in 2009.
Vieira was charged with three counts of alien smuggling, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
He also was charged with one count of transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

And he was charged with one count of copyright infringement, which carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a maximum fine of $100,000.

Vieira was arraigned before U.S. Magistrate Judge George Yanthis and is being held without bail.
James Hayes Jr., the special agent in charge of the New York office of the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement, announced the indictment along with Bharara.
"Today's arrest of Mr. Vieira again demonstrates ICE's resolve to bring those individuals who engage in criminal sexual exploitation to justice," Hayes said.
