EAST COUNTY — Eight people, possibly illegal immigrants, suffered minor to major injuries last night when they were thrown from a car that overturned on westbound lanes of Interstate 8 east of Alpine, the California Highway Patrol said.

Five ambulances, two helicopters, fire engines and CHP officers jammed the right freeway lane and shoulder after the crash around 9 p.m.

Witnesses reported a Toyota Camry speeding before it drifted onto the shoulder and overturned. People who had been stuffed into the car and its trunk were ejected. CHP Officer Brian Pennings said no law enforcement agency was chasing the car.
