Cartels Recruiting American Teens to Smuggle Drugs

EL PASO - Customs and Border Protection officials say they're seeing more teenagers trying to smuggle drugs across the border. Officials say mostly American kids, girls and boys from middle and upper-class families, are being caught with drugs strapped to their bodies.

Authorities say the cartels are re-focusing on recruiting more children from American schools. Bil Molaski is the El Paso Port Director for U.S. Customs and Border Protection and says, "Wherever they believe they can be successful or find a weak spot in our defense of the homeland, here, they're going to attempt to exploit that."

El Paso County Attorney Jose Rodriguez adds, "We had a kid, here, who lost a load and had some of his toes chopped off." Officials say many of the teens are not aware of the risks.

Danny Santos says he was recruited and paid as much as $5,000 by the Juarez cartel to smuggle loads of drugs across the border. Santos says he was 15 when he started as a driver for a mid-level cartel member.

He says, "It was a friend who had a cousin, that knew a guy, and that's where it all started. People feel they can trust you right, so you move up to something bigger. I can't say I wasn't nervous. You just can't show it. You still know what you're driving, you still know what you're doing, American citizen and all that, you just have to forget you have something illegal in the car. Let's say they catch them all tomorrow. The day after tomorrow there's going to be 30 new ones."

Santos says he got lucky. He did about 20 runs and made it through customs checkpoints at the border most of the time. He says he was only arrested once and served little jail time. Santos says he already spent most of the money he made working for the cartels.

Now our young teen will get punished harsher than the illegal parents second entry into our country.

    Isn't something wrong with this?

Of course they are. Why do you think they are exploiting every other perceived loophole of this country.....and some of those in government giving them free reign to do so.

I don't know about you, but the drug foothold got here due to Americans helping them, then it seems they didn't want to share the wealth when you could go in and out with ease, and your own here to help you, why share? They had their free reign for awhile and it's back to using Americans again to do their dirty work. Of course an American will pay dearly for doing so, while they'll waltz free.

I know when I was young, it was mostly whites caught in the drug dealing, then it switched to blacks, and now it's mostly hispanics. They want the attention off them for awhile, so they'll go back to resorting trying to get ours involved and taking the risk and fall for thier business. And with the economy like this, I'm sure more than enough willing to give it go.

I remember in the 70's, boy you could locked up for life for alot less than a small time smuggler is. They let them go if it's under 500 lbs. that was a lifetime for a citizen caught here. They toss people in jail for papers or a roach clip......rest assured, they'll "crack down" when it's citizens being put in jail and not illegals.

I am sick of the double standard isn't everyone else. Punishing Americans with stricter punishment and longer time to serve for the crime, too.

I became aware of the problem with college kids getting into trouble with alcohol some 15 years ago.

But send these same kids to war and kill them at 18 years of age.

So we have Mexican children having their hands smelled for pot and we are so strict on 18 year old ready for the horrors of terror.

I am so sicken of the DOUBLE STANDARD, aren't you?
