Meeting set on possible Pa. prison expansion

PHILIPSBURG, Pa. (AP) - Operators of a privately run federal prison for illegal immigrants plan a public hearing on possible expansion plans for the facility in central Pennsylvania.

Houston, Texas, based Cornell Companies Inc. operates the Moshannon Valley Correctional Center in Decatur Township, 100 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. It’s run under contract with the federal Bureau of Prisons.

The criminal facility for illegal immigrants is the only facility of its kind in the Northeast. Cornell vice president Charles Seigel says the government is asking for a proposal to expand the 1,500-inmate facility by as much as 50 to 100 percent.

Cornell and the Moshannon Valley Economic Development Partnership plan a public meeting Wednesday night at the prison’s training center.
