CO-llegal immigrant tuition bill faces tough vote
Colorado- illegal immigrant tuition bill faces tough vote
Updated 06:12 a.m., Wednesday, April 25, 2012
DENVER (AP) — A proposal to let illegal immigrant students attend Colorado colleges at a discounted rate will be tested by a panel led by Republicans who have expressed concern about the bill.
The students would have to have graduated from a Colorado high school to qualify for a tuition rate lower than the out-of-state price, but slightly higher than the in-state rate.
The bill passed a crucial vote Monday when Republican Rep. Tom Massey joined Democrats to advance the proposal out of a GOP-controlled committee. The bill faces long odds because another committee hearing it Wednesday does not have Republicans who have expressed support.
Democrats say the students deserve a chance to continue their education. Republicans say a college degree won't fix the student's legal status and they'll have trouble finding jobs.
