The Dream Act: Help Bring Back Juan Gomez

    David Sutta
    Reporting

(CBS4) SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE Killian senior high students banded together Thursday night to fight for one of their own. Their classmate is facing deportation after an immigration raid--often rumored--but rarely seen in South Florida.

The Killian graduate, aced 15 of his advanced placement classes, is a member of several honors society, excelled in football and got near-perfect SAT scores. However, Colombian born Juan Gomez, 18, is sitting inside a detention center in Broward County, awaiting deportation.

His family is also in the same predicament. His parents had a deportation order issued in their name back in 2002.

Gomez used cyberspace to inform his friends that he had been detained, and now those friends are using cyberspace to push a political campaign to save him from being kicked out of the country. Gomez text messaged his friends while he was being taken away in an immigration van. Now through the use of the social networking site Facebook, his friends have created a following of support for Gomez, To be exact, more than 400 students and supporters have joined the fight to support The Dream Act, which is a law that would allow immigrant students who live in the U.S. to stay, based on the premise that, as youngsters, they had no choice but to follow their parents when they made the decision to enter this country.

"It's hard to get 400 teenagers to get an interest in anything, let alone a political agenda, and one has galvanized these people into taking action," said friend Scott Eflenbein.

His friends say law enforcement should be focusing on criminals and not someone they believe is a great asset to this country.

However, Immigration officials say they make criminal cases priorities but cannot ignore a case of illegal immigrant such as his family.

He will be an excellent addition to his countries brain trust...and he can thank our country for educating him!

While I agree that he does appear to be a great student, he should go home and apply to return normally.

Also, his friends are misplacing the blame on ICE when it should be his parents. They could have hired an attorney in 2002 or gone home and applied for legal status to return. It appears they did nothing, so this is another case of mom and dad breaking the law and telling their kids it was the gov't fault.

I wish this student well and hopefully he can return after applying legally.

It seems that every person here illegally has an equally compelling story. Perhaps it is time SOMEONE started to concern themselves with the plight, and the rights, of American Citizens in this fracas.

Yes, there are millions of stories in this illegal movement.

It looks as if we are going to be treated to all of them before this is over.

Yes, he is exactly the kind of young man his country needs to help the country and its people.

Go home, young man, and help you people.
