Mexican authorities arrest 10 Zetas

Mexican authorities seized two large weapons caches belonging to the Zeta criminal organization in Matamoros; they also arrested 10 hitmen, documents show.

According to a press release from the Mexican army, one seizure took place Wednesday at a house in the Solidaridad neighborhood, when the soldiers were conducting a routine patrol and spotted a man carrying an assault rifle outside of a house.

When the soldiers went toward the house, the man fled; a search of the house revealed 192 grenades, 92 assault rifles,

12 handguns, 580 magazines, 264 stung guns and tasers, 66 military uniforms, 15 black tactical uniforms, 13 vests with federal police logos, the release stated.

In a separate operation, the Mexican Attorney General’s Office (PGR), announced the weekend arrest of 10 Zeta members and the seizure of a second weapons cache at another stash house. The location of the stash house was not available.

Isaias Barrera Valdez, a.k.a. "El Flaco," Rodrigo Briceno, Joel Garcia Toledo, a.k.a. "El Pozole," Gustavo Martinez Diaz a.k.a. "El Gus," Jorge Eduardo Contreras Villarreal, Francisco Javier Maldonado, Jose Saul Benavidez, a.k.a. "El Norris," Ubaldo Moreno Borhon, El Viejon, Humberto Saenz Torres, and Saul Rosario Cerecer, a.k.a. "El Pajaro," were arrested by the military and later charged by the PGR with possession of restricted firearms and ammunitions.

During their arrest, officials seized 22 AR-15 assault rifles with 193 magazines, 9 AK-47 assault rifles with 85 magazines, one 38cal handgun, 3,507 rounds of ammunition, three SUVs and various military uniforms.

The men were sent to federal prisons in Matamoros and Veracruz pending trial.
