Tot Thrown Over Wall in Crash

Bond Set For Mom Of Tot Thrown Over Wall In Crash
    Reporting Lisa Cilli
    POMPANO BEACH (CBS4) ―

The mother of a toddler who was thrown over an 18-foot wall and survived during a rollover crash will remain in jail for now.

Roseline Jean-Baptiste was in court Monday morning where a judge set her bond at $16,500. But even if she posts the bond, she may not get out of jail. She did not have proper papers and is now on an immigration hold until she's cleared by immigration officials.

Jean-Baptiste is charged with two counts of child neglect and failing to properly secure her two children in her car.

Her 1 ½ year old son and 3 ½ year old daughter are now staying with relatives. Both were in regular seat belts when Friday's accident took place. Jean-Baptiste swerved to avoid debris on the roadway, officials said. Her red Chevy Cobalt flipped several times and crashed into the concrete wall.

The impact caused the 1 ½ year old boy, Jacob Mentor, to be catapulted from the car. He flew over an 18-foot barrier wall on I-95 just south of Copans Road in Pompano Beach and landed in a grassy backyard, according to Broward County Fire Rescue. The toddler managed to escape serious injury.

Doctors released Jacob from the hospital Saturday with a clean bill of health and a small scratch on his ear. "That's a miracle," said Kathiana Jean Baptist, as she cradled Jacob in her arms while he slept. "I'm very happy that my little nephew survived."

Despite the ordeal, the family still hadn't learned its lesson. As Kathiana took Jacob home from the hospital, his two older sisters were there too, including three-year-old Shaniece. She was in the car during the accident and only suffered a few cuts on her hand. At the time she was wearing an adult seatbelt instead of the child seat she should have been seated in.

Once again Saturday, the three-year-old girl did not have a child seat to ride in as she took her brother home from the hospital. Broward General gave the family a seat for Jacob to ride in, but not Shaniece. When questioned about it, Kathiana looked puzzled and said the toddler would wear her seat belt.

It's an incident that also puzzled Jan and Bob Blount. They were playing cards by their kitchen window when they heard the crash, looked out their window and saw Jacob fly over the sound barrier wall and land in their neighbor's back yard.

To their amazement, the toddler was crying and screaming. Jan called 9-1-1 and ran out the front door to flag down Pompano Beach Fire Rescue while Bob tended to the injured child in the backyard.

"The child flew into my backyard," Blount told the 911 operator. "Please send an ambulance."

The Blounts later spoke to CBS4's Joan Murray and expressed their fears and relief when they heard the child's cries. "I saw something come flying out of the corner of my eye here comes this child in for a landing," Robert Blount said. His wife Jan said of the accident, "It was the loudest crash I heard in my life."

Robert Blount was the first to see the injured toddler as he lay on the grass.

"I thought I was coming out to see a dead child," Robert Blount said. "The child was crying. We knew his lungs were good. We knew he had to be stunned."
