In an effort to make sure inmates and guards are safe during today's immigration march in downtown Phoenix, Sheriff Joe Arpaio has locked down all six county jails and called in extra staff.

According to Arpaio, nearly 30 percent of all inmates are Hispanic, and about 1,000 are illegal immigrants.

The lockdown went into effect at 10:30 last night and will remain in effect until at least 6 tonight.

During the lockdown, no phone calls are allowed and inmates cannot see any visitors. Those privileges will be reinstated once the lockdown is lifted.

Extra staff has also been called in to make sure nothing happens at the jails during the march.
