BENSON, Ariz. - The Arizona Department of Public Safety says its officers seized more than 300 pounds of marijuana from a vehicle after a high-speed chase near Benson.

A DPS officer tried to stop the SUV for following too close Friday morning on Interstate 10. However, the driver accelerated to speeds more than 110 mph for about three miles, then slammed on the brakes and jumped out of the vehicle about nine miles west of Benson.

The SUV continued down an embankment and became stuck while the driver ran and hid in a desert area filled with thick brush.

The DPS sent in a canine who located the suspect and held him with his teeth until officers could take him into custody.

Authorities say 23-year-old Fernando Sanchez, of Mexico, was booked on several felony charges and treated at the scene by medics for dog bite wounds.
