What Kind of Immmigrants Do We Want?

Outside of the fact that this article uses the correct terminology i.e. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS....this is a huge assault on America and Americans! We Americans are being reduced, according to the WSJ, to the world's lowest common denominator!

What Kind of Immigrants Do We Want?

    April 17, 2008

With America's attention focused on relief for homeowners facing foreclosure, the case of Andrezj Derezinski, ordered to leave the U.S., vividly reminds readers that illegal immigrants are another vulnerable group in America ("Return Flight: Visa Violators Swept Up In Widening Dragnet," page one, April 10). They are also arguably more deserving of relief, can be easily assisted and are an asset to the country.

Granting legal residency to the millions of illegal immigrants requires no multibillion-dollar government bailout. It involves making the decision to allow people to pursue their dreams without government interference. Furthermore, legalizing these individuals and moving toward a policy of unrestricted immigration would benefit our country by providing an energetic population of largely young residents who would fully contribute to society without the fear of deportation.

The late economist Milton Friedman recommended unlimited immigration, as long as newcomer access to government benefits was limited for several years. This overhaul of immigration laws would also allow local and federal law-enforcement agents to focus on apprehending terrorists and criminals rather than hardworking families like the Derezinskis, and reverse the growing intrusion of law enforcement into people's lives as part of the effort to locate illegal immigrants.

Finally, those deemed illegal immigrants have no less right to be in this country than native-born Americans. As R. George Wright of Indiana University has argued, the only difference between these two groups is that native-born Americans have had the "undeserved good fortune to have been born in the United States."

Mr. Derezinski's story is a vivid illustration of the absurdity of current immigration laws. The circular argument that all illegal immigrants should be thrown out because they are here illegally begs the question why pursuing the American dream is illegal to begin with.

It is not Mr. Derezinski but the laws that prohibit him from continuing to live in the house he owns with his American-born children that are alien to the core values of American society.

Notwithstanding Mr. Derezinski's honorable efforts in achieving the American dream, his results are at the expense of violating a most basic law. While he should be applauded, I guess, for paying his taxes and keeping a job, nothing is mentioned of the cost of pursuing a fugitive of the law for more than a decade. In the end, it appears that Mr. Derezinski gets it, as all of us should: There are consequences to our decisions despite our most honorable intentions.

I don't think so. The Constitution certainly does not say so. Neither does the history of Federal immigration law either. Oh, and I certainly don't agree as probably most everyone here on this forum does too.

Maybe he's a legend in his own mind.

The kind who follow the rules and respect our laws, our citizens and our country. Our immigration laws explain it all.

Along the same lines, if you want to get into Canada or Australia, you have to have assets and prove you will not be a burden to their system. Why do we take just anyone in this country? Well, to answer my own question, I suppose we have made a reputation for ourselves for taking the tired, the poor, and the huddled masses. But that was during a time of no government assistance. Anyone could come here, but they had to make their own way. Now they come here and become an immediate drain on our country, due to our entitlement programs! Something has to change!

If you fill a balloon with enough air it will burst, If you fill the country with to many dependants we will ruin the economy, and the enviroment, and americas way of life. America will never be able to stay out of the 3rd world draggin around so much baggage. GRRRR!

Oh and I don't guess it matters that my ancestors (all immigrated legally) have been breaking their backs and paying taxes to build this country. My citizenship is my birthright!

George Wright, your opinion is hogwash.

This argument is wrong as it pertains to the United States and it's wrong as it pertains to virtually any country on the face of this planet. Countries have an absolute soverign right to determine who and how many are allowed to enter within their borders. To suggest otherwise is just asinine.

Probably because we are the truest melting pot nation in the world we have let in a substantial collection of people whose bedrock value is to HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT THE UNITED STATES! And I speak from the experience of having met some of them. Bcause the United States is far more advanced than their own society they immediately begin to resent that fact. Then they are educated that the reason we are is because we have cruelly exploited other people throughout our history, especially "people of color." Therefore the Caucasian race is, at heart, at fault for nearly everything. Never mind that until about a century ago most Europeans lived in circumstances comparable to present day Third World conditions. Or that most of them emigrated because of real fears---fears of poverty, starvation or persecution.

Today Americans are the educators of the world, not its masters. Others want our information on how to improve their societies: from electricity to modern medical practice to modern communication to modern government. We're obliging them.

Guess since it's because I'm older, still have to work to survive......what about us? I mean this big push for immigration because of our "aging population" has already made getting a job alot more difficult with so many younger foreigners, that you're sent out to pasture in your 50's...long before "retirement age". I mean if my generation is suffering because our youthful group, grew up and got older.....isn't the same going to happen to any society to only values "young residents"? So many older Americans were displaced with out-sourcing and such that we're left with no-where to turn. It's enough to up-grade skills....let alone a whole new career and a foreign language to master, just to be allowed to compete. And then what? Wait for the next "baby-boom" and aging die-off to learn yet another language to please the next new wave of foreign immigrants who fills in a temporary gap or skill? I fell into that "later" portion of the boom era and never got the benefits of the older ones and now looks like won't get any, and thrown out to pasture with hopefully a couple of decades left to try and survive with a society of "youth" who can't wait for you to hurry and die off once your kids get out of school.
