More than $217,000 in Narcotics Seized at Port of Entry

San Luis, AZ – U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Field Operations at the San Luis port of entry seized more than 114 pounds of Marijuana in two separate instances on Tuesday, arresting two persons in connection with the failed smuggling attempts.

The first narcotics seizure happened at about 3:23 p.m., when a CBP officer screening incoming vehicles at primary became suspicious of the driver of a 1995 Chrysler 5th Avenue sedan and sent him in for inspection, based on his answers to routine questions and discrepancies with the vehicle. CBP officers at secondary inspection, assisted by a K9 unit, searched the vehicle thoroughly and discovered compartments above the gas tank and in the dash area loaded with marijuana. A total of 20 packages of marijuana, weighing more than 46 pounds, were removed and seized. The driver, a 22-year-old U.S. citizen, was arrested and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation. The vehicle was seized.

The second narcotics seizure was at about 5:41 p.m., when a CBP officer screening incoming vehicles at primary became suspicious of the driver of a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee and referred him to secondary inspection, after the officer observed discrepancies with the vehicle. CBP officers at secondary inspection, assisted by a K9 unit, conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and discovered that the gas tank was loaded with marijuana. The officers removed 21 packages of marijuana weighing more than 68 pounds. The driver, a 21-year-old citizen of Mexico, was arrested and turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation. The vehicle was seized.
