"Illegal Alien" Halloween costumes: Are they offensive?

"Illegal Alien" in a jumpsuit costume - Image from Crafster.org One of the costumes consists of an outer space alien dressed in an orange jumpsuit and holding up, literally, a green card that says "GREEN CARD" on it. In case you miss all the hints, the orange jumpsuit has this message across the chest area in all capital letters: "ILLEGAL ALIEN."

This version is shown with a lovely pink baseball hat; like, say, something a construction worker might wear.

It's the Halloween costume that made the news this week: "The Illegal Alien."

Several stores, including large chains such as Target, Walgreens, Amazon and Toys R Us, were reported to have carried the costumes as they stocked up for Halloween parties.

But immigrant activists and others found the costumes offensive.
