Immigration Issues Overshadow Schwarzenegger’s Trade Mission

MEXICO CITY (KCBS) -- Concerns about illegal immigration and the U.S.-Mexico border fence are dominating Governor Schwarzenegger’s trade mission to Mexico, according to KCBS’ Doug Sovern.

Sovern is traveling with the governor in Mexico City and said Schwarzenegger has had to dodge criticism from Mexican President Vicente Fox, local and traveling media, and protestors about the construction of the border fence. The governor said he just doesn’t know if it will work, but it should be part of a larger approach.

"It has to be handled in a diplomatic way so we don't give the wrong impression and make the Mexicans feel like we are looking at them as the enemy because we're not."

Schwarzenegger told Sovern that even though he gets a bad rap from some Latinos, he loves them just the same. He said Mexicans shouldn’t hold his refusal to grant drivers licenses to illegal immigrants against him.

"We may disagree on this one issue, but there are so many other issues that we agree on. They should know that I'm a big fan and that I love them."

The sentiments were not returned by a small band of angry protestors who interrupted his speech at the Chamber of Commerce yesterday.
