Bossier Parish Sheriff speaks about immigration reform in D.C.

Nearly 50 Sheriffs from around the country, including Bossier Parish Sheriff, Julian Whittington, are in Washington D.C. tackling a controversial topic, illegal immigration.

The goal is to get congress to increase border security, and reform the current immigration system.

This morning, the group spent about an hour on Capitol Hill talking about illegal immigration in their communities.

The sheriffs later took their concerns to the White House.

Bossier Parish currently has 240 ICE detainees.

Whittington says this meeting shouldn't have an effect on them.

"We’ve got to start with people realizing that this is not just a few people sneaking over the border to go work in a vegetable patch. It's a lot bigger picture.

National security is at risk here. This is a huge issue for our country. We've got to get a handle on it and it has to start with a secure border," said Whittington.

Whittington and several other sheriffs from the south met with U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy today to talk about immigration.

The sheriffs will meet again tomorrow to continue urging congress to act on immigration reform.

What kind of immigration reform? If it's comprehensive in nature, including amnesty, we're not interested!

When normal people talk about immigration reform, they are NOT talking about amnesty, they're talking about fixing bad immigration laws, stopping illegal immigration, reducing legal immigration, fixing the loopholes, funding more immigration enforcement, building the wall and funding more border security, and arresting, deporting and removing illegal aliens.

I do not believe that. A lot of folks have caught on to the fact that 'comprehensive' is a cue word for amnesty. So now they're just dropping 'comprehensive' out of "comprehensive immigration reform" and just saying immigration reform. The exact same thing happened with the term illegal aliens. It started out illegal immigrants, then went to undocumented immigrants, and now a lot of folks just call them immigrants.

You're meaning may be true for some, but for many others I don't believe it is.

Whatever .... if you want to go around confused wrongfully accusing people of being amnesty supporters, when they aren't, that's up to you.

Huh? You've been in the game long enough to know what I'm saying is true. For the record, I didn't say ALL, I said many.

Today the terms "immigration reform" and "comprehensive immigration reform" are interchangeable depending on the argument attempted to be made and by whom.

Both Republicans and Democrats try to shy away from the word "comprehensive" these days. Oh, and so does the media whenever possible. There is no denying past failures at "comprehensive immigration reform" have given the word "comprehensive" a negative connotation.

No they aren't. I've watched you mischaracterize, mislabel, and wrongly accuse good people trying to help US fix this gawd damn mess "amnesty" supporters for over 1.5 years, when they are NOT amnesty supporters. The open borders lobby does not own the word "reform" or "immigration" or the phrase "immigration reform". Immigration reform means reforming our immigration system so it works better to stop illegal immigration and reduce legal immigration. Some proposals will include amnesty of one type or another, we oppose those, not because of the good things those bills might do, but because we oppose all amnesty regardless of what good the bills might otherwise achieve. That is our choice to do. Other proposals will be be straight immigration reform, fixing the loop-holes, building border security walls and fences, increasing BP and ICE agents, hiring more judges, reducing visas and green cards and on and on and on without any amnesty.

And none of this is a "game". It's one of the most serious threats facing our nation if not the greatest single threat, so you should not tarnish or darken the door of anyone anywhere trying to help US stop this scourge. This is our language and our fellow citizens have the right to use the words they want to describe their efforts in our language without being attacked by you or anyone else for their choice of words.
