FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A 30-year-old illegal immigrant living in Fairfield was charged with aggravated sexual assault, police say. Jesus Montes Valera, of Halley Avenue, was accused of raping a woman at knifepoint in his apartment Monday afternoon.

According to the police report, the attack occurred at Valera’s residence on the second floor of a two-family home at 194 Halley Ave. The victim was a woman in her 40s who knew Valera. After reporting the attack to police, she was taken to a local hospital for treatment for injuries.

A warranted search of Valera’s home turned up evidence that corroborated the woman’s story, police say. Because of his immigration status, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement assisted Fairfield police with the arrest and put Valera on retainer.

Valera was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault. He was held on $500,000 bond and taken to court Tuesday morning for arraignment.
