PHOENIX - A new poll from ASU's Morrison Institute shows there is overwhelming support for Arizona's immigration law -- with a few twists.
The pollsters asked 614 registered voters three questions all relating to parts of the bill that were struck down by Judge Susan Bolton in July. The results:
* Should people be required to produce documents verifying legal status?
81 percent said yes -- and the majority of respondents from every political affiliation agree -- 92 percent of Republicans, 79 percent of independents and 68 percent of Democrats.
* Should police be allowed to detain anyone unable to verify their legal status?
74 percent of respondents agreed -- but they differed widely by political affiliation. While 93 percent of Republicans and 73 percent of Independents favor detaining those who are unable to verify their legal status, only 50 percent of Democrats favor it.
* Should police be allowed to question anyone they think may be in the country illegally?
68 percent of voters surveyed favor the provision that would allow police to question anyone they think may be illegal during a lawful stop.
87 percent of Republican voters say yes, compared with 67 percent of Independents and 48 percent of Democrats.
"I think it is a wake up call for Democrats. They need to get behind this bill and stop trying to sabotage it," says State Rep. John Kavanagh.
All in all, 64 percent of respondents favor all three provisions, while only 17 percent oppose all three. Even respondents among different parties
