Support to end automatic citizenship for children of illegal immigrants grows

WASHINGTON — Rep. Elton Gallegly has argued for nearly 20 years that one way to fight illegal immigration would be to deny citizenship to U.S.-born children of people who enter the country illegally.

It has been a lonely battle. Until now.

Frustrated by Congress’ failure to do anything to curb illegal immigration, a number of prominent lawmakers are suggesting the time has come to consider repealing or rewriting the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the United States.

Advocates for Latino groups and immigrants’ rights say ending automatic citizenship for children born to undocumented immigrants would strike at a core American value and would do little to curb illegal immigration since most come to the country looking for a job.

Actually the opposite is true, not diluting our citizenship rights and soveriegnty by handing them out to milions or foreign criminals is a core American value.

Also if illegals don't come here for birthright citizenship, why are they so opposed to eliminating it? If it were of little value to them, they would say "go ahead and change it, we don't care".

Many legal experts say the only way to end automatic citizenship would be to amend the Constitution, which could take years and probably would not be successful. Constitutional amendments must be approved by two-thirds of the House and Senate and ratified by three-fourths of the states.

I disagree, I think if Congress would pass it, the states would ratify it in a couple of years. The problem is getting a pro-American Congess elected.

If the United States stepped up to the plate to end this practice of giving rewards to illegal aliens, Canada may stop the practice too. There needs to be some voices speaking out on this across our northern border, if they are not already.
