Gang rape is one of the trademarks of MS-13, the biggest and most violent gang in North America. With an estimated membership of 70,000, local clubs have been infiltrating major US cities, and they are especially strong in Mexico and Central America. Originally, the group, also known as Mara Salvatrucha, MS, and Mara, was formed by Salvadoran immigrants in Los Angeles to protect themselves from other Mexican or African-American gangs. Arrested members were typically deported, giving impetus to recruiting new members in their home countries.
