Store raided for selling prescription drugs

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- A store in east Charlotte is being investigating for allegedly selling prescription drugs illegally.

The name of the store is La Centro Americana # 2. It was open for business on Wednesday.

The store sells the usual items you would expect to find in a Latino grocery store, and according to Alcohol Law Enforcement agents, some items you should only find in a licensed pharmacy.

According to court documents, investigators sent an informant into the store on Aug. 5 and Sept. 5. Agents say the informant was able to purchase 10 Ampicillin pills. The cost was $20 both times.

The next day investigators raided the grocery store and they removed numerous prescription drugs, including antibiotics like Ampicillin and Bactrin, and the injectable birth control drug Depo Provera.

Agents won't talk about their investigation, but an expert with UNC's School of Pharmacy told NewsChannel 36 these are prescription drugs for a reason and people who take them need to be under a doctor's care. If someone is misusing antibiotics it increases the chance that if they do get sick the antibiotic won't work.

So far, no arrests have been made in the case.

I'd like to know who ordered the prescription drugs. They obviously dont have a pharmacist at the store.

This is going on in many immigrant stores. Now if all Americans would just go get our medicines from these immigrant stores we could do away with FDA, and lower our insurance cost.

So immigrants watch that FDA and insurance groups for they are owned by big businesses not by the American people who are burdened to death with your debt.

this is exactly what happens when you have illegal immigration. These people come here and live exactly like at home, in utter corruption and lawlessness.

Probably smuggled them in from south of the border, where you can buy anything over the counter...

I'm sure they are smuggled in as it is easy to get many prescription drugs across the country at about 1/10 the cost here in the US.

Just me, but somehow I think this crackdown is more to protect drug companies than to protect people.

Many, many elderly people, and some not elderly, get their prescriptions filled in Mexico. I've not seen it, but some people say it almost looks like a caravan of elderly people going to the border soon after their fall arrival in AZ.

I've been expecting our government to crack down on this.

We have friends that live in AZ and they get medicine from Mexico. It is also a common practice for people to get prescriptions from Canada. Huge cost savings. Years ago the doctor gave me a one time prescription the was over $800 in the states and just barely over $100 from Canada. The pharmaceutical companies in this country are screwing the American people.

In most cases, it's the drug stores that are doing the screwing. You can buy drugs at Costco for about half of any other pharmacy.

Zopidem, the generic ambien, costs drug stores about 5 bucks for a hundred. They sell for $85-100+ for 30 of them. The Costco price is 15.00.
Yes, they are they same drugs, delivered by the same company.

Wal-Mart's $4.00 prescriptions cost them about .25-30 cents.
