PHOENIX -- Maricopa County Sheriff's deputies are worried about a potential health hazard after arresting 11 undocumented immigrants during a routine traffic stop Tuesday and discovering one of them is infected with chicken pox.

Deputies say they pulled a van over near Interstate 17 and Jomax Road and noticed that four of the undocumented immigrants, all from Mexico, didn't appear to be feeling well.

After talking with the driver and passengers, deputies confirmed that one of the suspects had chicken pox and three others were possibly infected with the airborne disease.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says illegal immigration is not just a law enforcement problem, but is also a potential health hazard.

"This is a risk to our community and to my deputies," Arpaio said. "Deputies never know what they may face in the course of enforcing human smuggling laws."

Sheriff Arpaio goes on to say that over the last two months, four inmates, all undocumented immigrants, had chicken pox, which forced him to quarantine 160 other inmates.
