WILKES-BARRE — An illegal immigrant from Guyana who had been previously deported from the United States was arrested Thursday on drug charges in Wilkes-Barre, city police said.

Police said they were tipped off that an illegal immigrant was selling crack cocaine on Scott Street in Wilkes-Barre. On Thursday afternoon, agents from the city’s violent persons unit arrested the man, Leonard Sampson, at 396 Scott St., police said.

Sampson, 47, was arrested for being in possession of crack cocaine, police said.

According to police, Sampson gave police several different names, was using a fake identification card from the Virgin Islands and was wanted by New York State Parole department. Police said Sampson was also wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and had returned to the country after being deported by immigration officials in the past.

Police said Sampson had been living in Newark, N.J. and at 396 Scott St.

They performed surveillance on the home and arrested Sampson when he tried to get into a vehicle around 5:15 p.m. on Thursday.

He was taken into custody to be turned over to New York or immigration officials, police said.
