Bill to Stop Rewarding Illegal Immigration in California Halted

    FAIR WAS THERE

(Sacramento, CA) Assembly Bill 589, by Dr. Bill Emmerson R-63 failed to get out of the California Assembly’s Education Committee on Tuesday. What came as a surprise to those who had traveled to Sacramento to testify in favor of the bill, was that the legislation failed to get a single vote in support, losing 0-5. 4th District Republican Tim Leslie from Roseville voted against the bill, after citing his support of 2001 legislation (AB540) that awarded illegal alien’s attending California colleges with in-state tuition.

AB 589 sought to prohibit further rewarding of illegal immigration with reduced college tuition, and the supporters of the bill spoke of the unfairness of the current law, and how it punished citizens and legal resident students who had done nothing wrong, but could find themselves with no room in a classroom or course of study because their slot was taken by an illegal alien.

Lupe Moreno, President of Latinos for Immigration Reform, spoke in favor of AB 589, telling the committee of the unfairness of the current law to her children and grandchildren, American citizens, all.

I testified at yesterday's hearing about the bill and told the committee the current policy of granting illegal alien students in-state tuition is unwise and unfair. I also commented that AB589 was fully consistent with federal law and Congressional intent. I then reminded the committee an illegal alien college graduate from a California State University or Community College was still ineligible to work in this country under federal immigration law.

Also speaking in support of AB589 were Angie Morfin, of Latinos for Immigration Reform, and Ric Oberlink of CAPS, Californians for Population Stabilization.

Looks like the Peoples Republic of Mexifornia has thumbed their noses at their constituents yet again, not that I'm suprised or anything.
