200 at Phoenix tea party rally against illegal immigration

    The Arizona Republic .

As she lent her support to an anti-illegal immigration tea party Saturday, Brandy Baron couldn't help but think of her Hispanic grandparents.

The pair came from Mexico to the United States but only because they had work waiting for them, the Phoenix resident said. "They did it the right way."

Baron was one of at least 200 people who showed for the rally Saturday morning at the state Capitol in Phoenix.

Many carried signs. Baron displayed her message on her T-shirt: "It's not about hate for any people or race. It's about love for our country and pride." The 53-year-old retired massage therapist said she doesn't want to see the country given over to "tax breakers."

Even though her father's parents were Hispanic, she doesn't consider herself a Mexican-American. She dislikes the term. "I'm an American."

Jacque Jacobsen, 56, held the American flag high and said she came out to giver her support, thankful for the cool weather.

"So many people are just bleeding the system," said Jacobsen, who works 34 hours a week for a laser manufacturing company. The Phoenix resident has health care but is concerned too much pressure on the medical system could put that coverage in jeopardy.

When 15-year-old girls come from Mexico to give birth, it's not fair, she said. "I don't mind helping people out but they need to become legal, do what's right."

Today's event was organized by the Phoenix group American Citizens United. Similar tea parties were expected to be held today in cities across the country. The events are said to be aimed at gathering opposition to the comprehensive immigration-reform bill Democrats in Congress plan to introduce, possibly by the end of this month.

Tea Party Against Illegal Immigration Held at Capitol

PHOENIX - Several tea parties were held around the country Saturday, aimed at illegal immigration.

Hundreds of people lined up at the Arizona state Capitol to drum up opposition to the comprehensive immigration reform bill being passed around in Congress.

The bill is rumored to include amnesty for illegal immigrants, something that American Citizens United opposes.

"We need to have borders, secure borders. We cannot give amnesty, because once you say amnesty, they keep coming more and more," says Anna Gaines, ACU.

Counter-protesters from the National Socialist Movement were also on hand at the rally.

PHOENIX -- An anti-immigration rally at the State Capitol took an unexpected turn Saturday when a group of Neo-Nazis turned out.

American Citizens United was one of several groups protesting across the country today, opposing a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

The group, which is against amnesty for illegal immigrants, made it clear that racism had no place at its rally. The mood, however, changed drastically when Neo-Nazi protesters tried to join.

Police stepped in and calmed everybody down.

American Citizens United said the Neo-Nazi message was not welcome at its cause.

"That's a completely, you know, racist organization," said Jim Fairmont of American Citizens United. "This is not about racism, it's about law enforcement. Period."

On the flip side of the immigration issue, a coalition of immigration advocates, law enforcement and others have created Reform Immigration for America, and will be rallying in support of the upcoming bill, which includes a legalization program for those who are in the country illegally.

I was going to go to this but where it was held is in a Hispanic area. I live by myself and have already been physically threatened by them. It's pretty sad that I didn't have the guts to go fearing I would be hurt. I'm moving though and I vow to continue this fight for our great country.

I'm pretty sure there were others that felt the same as me. I'm still convinced the mayor of Phoenix is being threatened and that is why he goes along with this garbage. I don't know how any rational citizen could look at the mess this has created and not be against it.

Don't feel bad "laughinglynx" I guarantee you thousands of Americans are feeling the same way....these people are bold and they really feel entitled not to mention down right vicious!

These are the real terrorists! It amazes me we can not protest or exercise our freedom of speech in our own country with out being mauled or threatened.

I am glad to hear you are moving!
