MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Organizers say roughly 500 people gathered for a peaceful rally on the steps of the Alabama Capitol to protest the state's new law cracking down on illegal immigration.

The rally was organized by Jose Antonio Castro, host of a Spanish-language radio show. Speakers at the rally shared their experiences and talked about how they and their communities have been affected by the new law.

Castro was presented with nearly 50,000 signed petitions against the law that have been gathered from within the state and around the country. He plans to deliver the petitions to Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley on Monday.

Supporters and opponents alike have called the law the toughest in the country targeting illegal immigration.
