MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama counties are returning to their old way of doing business now that the attorney general's office has given them new advice about Alabama's tough new law on illegal immigration.

The law makes it a crime for illegal immigrants to enter into contracts with government agencies. That includes purchasing car tags and other licenses.

The new law created a headache for county officials and long lines at some courthouses. But Attorney General Luther Strange issued guidance last week saying that only the federal government, not county workers, could verify immigration status.

The executive director of the Association of County Commissions, Sonny Brasfield, says counties for now will go back to using the same criteria as always when selling tags.
