Mexican consulate discouraging desert deaths

The Mexican Consulate in Yuma has launched a program aimed at preventing more immigrant lives from being lost.

Last month, U.S. Border Patrol agents recovered the bodies of five people in southern Arizona believed to be illegal immigrants.

A spokeswoman for the consulate's Department of Assistance and Protection for Mexicans says brochures and posters carry a message to discourage illegal immigrants from attempting to cross the scorching hot desert.

The Yuma Sun reports the consulate is also using the campaign to let migrants know about the risks they face from smugglers who often abandoned their human cargo in the desert.

Part of the information campaign includes distributing materials in areas where migrants might be found, such as bus stations, shelters and public areas.
