Fitchburg police chief draws fire over immigration stance

FITCHBURG - Fitchburg Police Chief Robert DeMoura has drawn fire over recent public comment in support of giving illegal immigrants access to drivers’ licenses.

Fitchburg City Councilor Dean Tran told the Sentinel & Enterprise Thursday he vehemently opposes the idea because in his eyes it rewards illegal behavior. And Democratic State Rep. Stephen DiNatale said he would not support such changes to state law until Congress passes immigration reform.

DeMoura drew a standing ovation this week at a state-sponsored immigration forum when he said giving illegal immigrants drivers’ licenses would help his department with public safety.

Tran said DeMoura should follow the law or he will face calls to resign.
