Jeb Bush: Immigration reform needed because immigrants are ‘more fertile’

While speaking at the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s Road to the Majority conference in Washington, D.C., former Florida Governor Jeb Bush said Congress should pass immigrationreform because immigrants are "more fertile," the Washington Post reported Friday.

“Immigrants create far more businesses than native-born Americans,” he said. “Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population. Immigrants create an engine of economic prosperity.”

“If we don’t do it," he argued, "we will be in decline, because the productivity of this country is dependent upon young people that are equipped to be able to work hard."

Twitchy said that Twitter users reacted sharply to Bush's comments.

"So long, Jeb," said Human Events' John Hayward.

"If you're one of those ppl who gets wistful about Jeb Bush just...no," another person tweeted.

"He is your guy Team Amnesty not ours,"tweeted "DrewM."

"Let’s give Jeb a break, eh? Immigrants have a higher fertility rate. They’re not “more fertile”. He misspoke. You know what he meant," tweeted Slate's Matt Yglesias.

The Post noted that Bush, whose wife is an immigrant born in Mexico, has long supported "comprehensive immigration reform," which is seen by many conservatives as amnesty.

The Post noted on Wednesday that for the first time in U.S. history, more white people died than were born, according to population estimates for 2012.

“We’re jumping the gun on a long, slow decline of our white population, which is going to characterize this century,” said Brookings Institution demographer William Frey. “It’s a bookend from the last century, when whites helped us grow. Now it’s minorities who are going to make the contributions to our economic and population growth over the next 50 years.”

"Great," Jim hoft wrote at the Gateway Pundit. "They can make babies so let’s give them citizenship."
