Negaunee Township, September 12
Eleven Suspected Illegal Aliens Detained

The bust started with a forgery investigation.

Authorities took 11 illegal aliens into custody Wednesday morning at a motel in Negaunee Township. They were transported to Sault Ste. Marie where their cases will be adjudicated or they'll be deported. The bust was a joint effort involving the Marquette County Sheriff's Department, the Michigan State Police and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency.

The case arose after there was a complaint about a forged immigration document. Authorities believe at least some of the suspects were working on construction jobs in the U.P.

"Recently, obviously, since the hail storm, there have been a number of contractors and sub-contractors in the area, and we believe that that is the catalyst for the influx of those illegal aliens," explained Captain Dave Lemire of the Marquette County Sheriff's office.

Officials say some roofing companies have been forced to hire outside labor to keep up with the huge demand to repair the damaged roofs.
