FROM STAFF REPORTS

U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Yuma Sector on Thursday found more than $530,000 worth of marijuana in the desert south of Wellton., the patrol said.

The pot, weighing more than 665 pounds, was found by agents who had been following a set of footprints they found on the east side of the Gila Mountains.

Following the prints up into the mountains, they found the marijuana concealed beneath large rocks at about 2 p.m., the patrol said.

Agents also found a gas-powered leaf blower that may have been used to conceal the footprints of the smugglers.

The smugglers were not located.

The marijuana, valued by the patrol at $532,000, was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration.
