    Metcalfe renounces award

State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe says he was shocked by letters and postcards bearing his name that are circulating in the county this month -- supposedly sent by a religious group based in Erie with alleged ties to one of the nation's oldest white supremacist groups, the Ku Klux Klan.

"I've never experienced communication with this kind of hate," said Metcalfe, R-Cranberry.

Metcalfe received the documents from a group calling itself "Christian Nation -- Community of Christ Church," which announced that it had chosen him to receive an award for being a "Christian Soldier."

Metcalfe issued a statement Wednesday to publicly distance himself from the group and reject its award. He also decried the group's use of his name in publicizing the award and booking the venue for a rally, Adams Township Community Park.

Metcalfe said he had never heard of the group, nor the two men listed in the letters as its leaders, John Nayst and Jerry Western.

He has, however, heard of Thomas Robb, to whose Web site the mailings refer. Robb claims he is the leader of the Ku Klux Klan -- a title sometimes claimed by more than one person.

In addition to the letters received by Metcalfe and Adams Township requesting a permit for a rally, Metcalfe said constituents in his district on Wednesday also received postcards from Christian Nation, announcing the rally and claiming that Metcalfe would be a guest.

Not only does Metcalfe not plan to attend, he's starting to suspect the group may not exist.

Metcalfe says inconsistencies in the letters -- incorrect dates, misspelled names and other things -- are leading him to wonder whether the whole thing may be cooked up by his political enemies.

"I suspect that it may be someone in Butler County using this as a political attack, trying to tie me to a hate group to defame my name and ruin my reputation.

"If it's a group or the illusion of a group, either way, they're hate mongers," Metcalfe said.

Metcalfe is a Christian and social conservative and has been outspoken about his religious beliefs during his time in the state House.

Recently, comments he made on the House floor sparked a firestorm of criticism against him.

Last month, Metcalfe held up voting on a routine House proclamation honoring the 60th annual convention in Harrisburg of a Muslim group, saying he wouldn't vote for the measure because Muslims "do not recognize Jesus Christ as God."

Metcalfe later said his comments were reported -- and criticized -- out of context in "stories being written that were based on other stories."

"No one reported what I actually said on the floor," he said.

Metcalfe said his comments were aimed at the wording of the resolution, not at the beliefs of Muslims.

"I was commenting on William Penn's vision of a 'Godly society,'" said Metcalfe.

The resolution, he said, was trying to link Penn's religious beliefs with those of Muslims.

"The resolution would have had you believe that William Penn's views were the same as Muslims', and that's simply not true," said Metcalfe.

Metcalfe said he doesn't know if those comments were what sparked the Christian Nation letters, but "if (the letters) are politically motivated, then it's even more despicable."

Metcalfe said he is speaking with state House legal counsel to find out what he can do about the mailings and plans to turn over copies of the letters and postcards to the Butler County District Attorney's office for investigation.

Three Adams Township Supervisors said they didn't know about the controversy or the transaction to reserve the park for the rally.

To reserve the park, an out-of-town person or organization must pay a fee of about $100, put down a security deposit and fill out an application -- which is approved "at the board's discretion," Supervisor Linda Lees said.

Metcalfe said the group mailed $100 in cash with its request to use the park. He suspects they did that -- instead of mailing in a check -- to hide their identities.

"I'm told someone has to actually show up in person to sign the forms," Metcalfe said. "I hope someone shows up so we can see who these people are and they can be confronted about what they're doing."

I've contacted Metcalfe's office and left a message. I've offered to put up a $1,000 reward for anyone that provides authorities with information leading to the true identity of the illegal alien supporters putting out these bogus letters.

With the illegal alien population growing in size, I guess anyone can go on a letter writing campaign to smear a person or a group of people. You never know what evil is lurkng in the shadows.
