EARLY in 1969, three mayoral challengers — a conservative Democrat, a conservative Republican and a lonely liberal Democrat — denounced an agreement between City University and advocates for black and Puerto Rican students that would grant any high school graduate access to the university. Herman Badillo, the Bronx borough president and the lone liberal among the three Cassandras, sounded the loudest alarm over the policy, which would be both revered and vilified as “open admissions.â€

Sounds like he gives the Hispanic community some of the same talk Bill Cosby is giving the Black community.

They have had many immigrants say learning English opened the world to them......there is no benefit to learning Spanish.....there is for English. We aren't asking they do anything that doesn't ensure themselves a better way......Spanish earns and gets me no-where. There are alot of languages that get me no-where unless I'm moving to their country. There is nothing wrong with wanting to keep a part of your culture alive........heck....they are begging for Arabic translators......you never want to let a language go.....but it is NOT a downward thing to expect Spanish speakers to learn English especially in our own country.
