234 now sentenced from Postville raid

CEDAR RAPIDS At the end of Wednesday, 234 detainees were sentenced, United States Attorney Matt Dummermuth announced Thursday afternoon. Ninty-four defendants pleaded guilty and were sentenced on felony federal charges on Wednesday.

There were 140 who pleaded guilty and sentenced on Monday and Tuesday. The 389 detainees were taken into custody on May 12 at Agriprocessors, Inc. in Postville.

The court began 8 a.m. and concluded about 9 p.m. Wednesday. They are expected to finish the proceedings about 6 p.m. today in Waterloo.

There were 75 defendants sentenced to five months in prison and two were sentenced to one year in prison. They pleaded guilty to using a false identification document to obtain employment and admitted they used the means of identification of a real person.

Eight defendants were sentenced to five months in prison after pleading guilty to false use of a social security number or social security card.

Two defendants were sentenced to five years probation after pleading guilty to false use of a social security number or social security card.
