ITA conducts "Border That Works Tour 2008" next week

By Steve Taylor and MarĂ*a González-Escareño
U.S. Department of Commerce Assistant Secretary David Bohigian

McALLEN, March 22 - Border business and political leaders have been very critical of increased wait times at the international bridges but next week they will learn how bad the federal government believes the situation is.

The U.S. Department of Commerce’s International Trade Administration (ITA) has been conducting a multi-state U.S.-Mexico border study to evaluate the impact wait times have on the economy.

The results of the study will be unveiled by U.S. Department of Commerce Assistant Secretary David Bohigian at briefings and stakeholder discussions in San Diego, Nogales, El Paso, Laredo, and McAllen, next week. Bohigian is calling it his “Border That Works Tour 2008.â€

Two minutes of inspection could create hours of backlog at the bridges, they said.
Two minutes of inspection at our border--airport security takes longer than that to inspect one person and their belongings.
People, vehicles and contents inspected in two minutes????? That is not enough time--we need safety and security over speed.

Does the study take into consideration the prevailing system of corruption and bribery within the Mexican government and government officials, the drug cartels, the smugglers, and crime rate within Mexico?

Solutions to problems at the border do not necessarily require huge government investments. Many problems can be solved through private sector involvement and through increased communication and better use of existing technologies.
    PRIVATE SECTOR? No

[quote]“The purpose of the study was to quantify the impact that border wait times have on U.S. and Mexican industry and consumers, which ITA can use as a tool to encourage high impact public-private solutions,â€

Eck said the messages that ITA wants to get out on the tour are that:

    • In order to balance negative press in the border region regarding illegal immigration, drug violence and security concerns, this tour will highlight a border that is working and making life better for American citizens.
Yea sure! If you really believed that then why do we have a wide open border in which millions of illegal invaders pour across like water.

How is this uncontrolled illegal invasion making life "better" for American Citizens?

U.S. companies send parts to Mexico and they turn around and export back to the U.S. cars, tvs, auto parts, and a thousand other products. Then they turn around and gripe about the delays.
