Former Nebraska senator fighting immigration policies

Former Nebraska senator fighting immigration policies
By NATE JENKINS / The Associated Press | Posted: Thursday, July 8, 2010 2:00 pm

A former state senator who sponsored the bill that now allows some illegal immigrants to get in-state college tuition is trying to raise money to fight policies she says pit neighbors against each other.

Former Sen. DiAnna Schimek of Lincoln says in a letter sent Thursday to supporters of Nebraska Appleseed Center that policies including the new law in Fremont are "designed to create fear and division."

Schimek asks for money to help ensure no other cities pass similar laws, that prenatal care to women including illegal immigrants is restored, and to stop an Arizona-style immigration law from passing.

The Fremont law, expected to go into effect this summer if it withstands legal challenge, would ban the hiring or renting of housing to illegal immigrants
