Fines jump for hiring of illegal immigrants

The federal government has increased fines for hiring illegal immigrants by as much as $5,000, effective today, as part of an effort to ramp up worksite immigration enforcement, but some say the nominal increase isn't likely to change how some companies do business.
Locally, The State Chamber — now embroiled in a lawsuit against the Oklahoma attorney general and Gov. Brad Henry over the statewide immigration enforcement statute, known as House Bill 1804 — said the fine increase is an example of how immigration laws should be enforced.
"Are we concerned about how large of a fine it is, yes. ... But that's a question that once it is decided, every employer in every state is going to be treated the same way,â€
