AWICHITA, Kan. (AP) _ Local law enforcement agencies in Kansas are stepping up their checks on the immigration status of suspects.

Federal records show that Kansas police checked on immigration status in 3,315 cases for the fiscal year ending September 30th. About 2,800 such checks were made the previous year.

The trend is repeated nationwide.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement got about 728,00 such inquiries from across the country this year, compared with 661,000 the previous year.

Carl Rusnok of the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement
says more local police agencies are getting special training that allows them to enforce immigration laws.

So far, 33 law enforcement agencies have gotten the added training, and 70 more agencies are waiting for it.
