Driver smashes into Covington church while learning to drive

An illegal alien who was trying to teach himself to drive slammed into a Covington church Wednesday as he drove a sports utility vehicle.


The Covington Police Department received a report around 4:40 p.m. that a sports utility vehicle had just crashed into the Iglesia de Dios Ebenezer Church at 1271 North Lee Rd.

Upon arriving at the scene officers found the vehicle stuck in the front of the church. Roman Zeferino, 48, of 620 Magee St. in Covington, was identified as the driver.

At first officers were not able to figure out how the accident happened, since Zeferino only spoke Spanish. A passer-by who spoke Spanish was able to translate for the officers.


Zeferino said he is an illegal alien and the day of the accident he was trying to teach himself to drive. He lost control of the vehicle, forcing him to slam into the church that had just opened after undergoing restoration. He said while he had insurance for the vehicle and proof of registration under his name, he did not have a driver’s license.

Zerefino was charged with careless operation of a motor vehicle, no driver’s license and operating a motor vehicle without lawful presence.
